So, I've done this before, where we pulled the rubber seals/gaskets out and just ran the 8 mil window film about 1/4" into the frame, then simply but the rubbers back.

Also I've done it where we ran 995 in there and THEN put back the rubber gaskets. BUT I was told that wasn't the right way to do it ... my question is: if the customer wants an attachment system, what's wrong with putting the 995 sealant into the gap and then putting the gaskets back? Seems like a great and very clean way to do it... Any thoughts?

Another question would be: if just running the sec film into the frame a bit and then re-installing the gaskets, would that (on some level at least) attach the film to the frame?

Did you read the post in General just before yours? That can happen to you if you do not go by the recommended installation process for securing safety film to frame and glass for break and enter, wind-borne, or blast protection ... especially if your client is savvy enough to verify you did not do the work to spec.

Dow 995 and or a certified equivalent were extensively tested way back when it became a necessity, thereby producing public documentation of performance. The amount of sealant contact to frame and film/glass depends on which of the three aforementioned testing scenarios.

Break and enter being the least amount. 3/4" contact on both surfaces is for blast (trimming only the cap of any rubber grommet holding the glass in the frame) and a must to meet specified blast protection.

In a case of failure to perform as per initial testing results, you can and may be held accountable for not installing to manufacturers recommended specs, if your client calls into question the install paid for. It's always best to cover your azz and price accordingly.

Dow is a mofo to clean away in the future, so use as specified to minimize frame clean up or possible frame replacement costs (if depositing inside in combination with where the gasket sits).

If you have access to a technical service rep from the film you buy, contact them for specs according to installation need.

So can you tell me where that  "post in General just before yours" is, or what member posted it so I can read it for myself?

Just trying to get all the info first before quoting the job - I did hear before, from a factory rep, that putting the sealant into the gap, and then re-installing the gaskets is not the right way; but I remember him saying that it's only because if the glass was ever broken and replaced, it would be nigh unto impossible to get all  the 995 out and the whole frame would have to be replaced.
