Scratches After Tinting
Okay, last response from me: Having worked side by side with a technician for seven years providing patterns for the library of one program out there, I would say someone scanned the pattern they received, leaving all cut edges and corners as they were OR the film was hand cut like a pattern maker has to do for a plotter library or a tinter not using a plotter. A good technician will clean up provided pattern cuts to the point of smooth rounded edges and they also smooth out long linear lines using the software like an artist to provide clean look around the entire pattern edge. In the process of cleaning up edges, the view is a pixelated (dotted) pattern edge that the technician shifts to or fro in their effort to provide a clean cut pattern that fits over and into the solid ceramic black border of auto glass. The film should not be cut short landing the film edge in the dotted transition area or the viewing area of the glass. A plotter will cut film similar to what you see when a house structure is built by 3D printer; no dips and valleys on long linear edges and no pointed corners UNLESS they were built into the design by the draftsman. Namaste -

I was able to take these at home tonight as well. From what I’ve read, there shouldn’t be wavy lines or jagged edges when a plotter is used. Would it be worth taking this to the owner to argue that a plotter was used? -

That you for all your responses on this. I reached out to the owner via text to ask him about being the vehicle back by to have it looked at. He was adamant that nothing was hand cut and told me he wasn’t sure what else I wanted him to do. I asked him how that would explain the strip that ended up on the exterior of the moonroof and he responded by saying “probably from where we weeded the pattern out.” I asked him what that involved and the text wasn’t deliverable (aka he blocked my phone number). I attached some photos that I was able to capture. The camera fails to capture it, but the lines are continuous and not just those sections. -

Well, you've got a good case if you want to return and proceed having them step up and make it right. Of course, replacement would have you getting the replacement glass tinted, to. You can opt out using that shop after glass replacement; it would be your cost to have them tinted again) If you feel you could win in small claims, that would be another route, especially if there is continued refusal to make you whole. Your previous and follow up description spells it out well enough that even a non-pro tinter could conclude it had to have happened at that shop. You do know what I have shared here may not be admissible in court. You can try presenting this discussion, but chances are not good it would be admissible. And, I'm sure the owner of this site would appreciate not being drug into a courtroom situation. Furthermore, I am unable to admit my true identity and background leading to providing knowledgeable support to this forum (bound by NDA) ... I am retired and sometimes cringe at helping Joe Public anymore (exampled in a more recent discussion here). Your situation as you presented so far tells me, and possibly others, something stinks about your experience with that shop. I want to believe most members here don't like to go to the lengths I go to because they may wish to avoid exposure that would impact their businesses. There you go. Ball's in your court (pardon the pun). -

Thank you for the response to this. The vehicle had less than 100 miles at the time I took it in and we had picked it up from the dealer the day before, so nobody else had been near it. I’d looked it over and these definitely weren’t there. Yea all of the scratches/lines are outside the viewing area and run parallel to it along the border. You can see a little of a “crossing” where the corners were cut at the edges. Some of the sides have only 1 line and others have 2 lines running parallel where it looks like it was cut twice. It seems like a dead giveaway that it was cut because there was a strip of tint that I found on the sunroof once I got home from where it was cut. All the windows have clean borders from where it looks like a plotter was used. But even looking at the windshield on the inside you can see where it isn’t straight from or at the gaps. -

I experienced a similar issue after having my car tinted, and it was quite disappointing. In my case, I found that using a glass polishing compound specifically designed for automotive glass helped reduce the visibility of the scratches significantly. Brands like Cerium Oxide or Glass Polish can be effective when applied with a microfiber cloth and a polishing pad. Just remember to use it gently to avoid causing further damage. If the scratches are particularly stubborn, you might also consider consulting with a professional detailer who specializes in glass repair. Good luck with your DIY solution, and I hope it works out for you! -

If you can feel the scratch with your nail, odds are you aren't getting it out easily. Otherwise you can try cerium oxide and polish them some I suppose. The windshield glass and the moonroof glass are two different kinds of glass, so hopefully someone smarter than me (@Tintguy1980)can give you some solid advice.
