3M & Avery Deal Scrapped & Restructured Business Divisions

Why do you think this would be a good match for our industry?

fat understands big-boys mindset. =)

Just because it is good for a couple of big boys doesn't mean it is necessarily good for the industry as a whole. I was just curious if you could give a reason why this would be beneficial ...

sure VTD =) 3M window films are made in US, Korea and Japan. From the buyer's perspective, there are synergies and cost savings by soaking up a major manufacturing facility and reduce dependence on external parties who go around bragging that 3M outsources some products to them. In the process, they will also get some access to the seller's trade information. From the seller's perspective, the market is flushed with lot's of low-interest fiat now = this is the best time to fetch a good price before super-recession comes in 1-3 years later. Therefore, imho, why shouldn't 3M try?

Yes, here's what I predict when this day comes. They have the $$$ to buy someone, not only CPFilms. I think I will live to see this day. I agree that there isn't much benefit to our trade. For the independent distributors and dealers, we will be looking at the creation of a Walmart for our industry.

When that happens, other US factories can mitigate the impact by filing some anti-monopoly complaints. Commonwealth did that in Oct 2008 when CPfilms took over ATI. It was later "voluntarily dismissed with prejudice" in Mar 2009 at the mutual request of the parties.

It has been my experiemce the big boys don't understand the heartbeat or personality of the window tint industry; they generally wind up mucking up their ability to retain dealers that feed their bottom line. Why? Wall Street pressures and the hiring of and placement of individuals who haven't any experience in the film industry either, which brings with it a revolving door employment environment.

Guest Infiniteoptiks StL

If they were smart they would buy my Infiniteoptiks decorative film business. We have a strong national dealer following and make incredible products. We just signed another client I legally can't name that's a whopper. Walk into casinos nationwide and look at our products. We don't need window film any longer. We don't worry about winter slow downs. We just print whatever our client wants. Have a nice day Eastman, 3M, Madico! But we won't be cheap1

A bid to buy CPFilms from Eastman may have already been tendered and summarily rejected; the performance films division of Solutia might have been the attraction for Eastman. Most acquisitions from the big guys will more than likely be limited to other big guys as many of them have either bought into a smaller niche concept only to face little growth potential (e.g. solar graphics from Bek.) or they have already investigated technologies such a print on polyester. Case in point, the Vanceva division inside Solutia already is capable of producing elaborate see-through, scenic-type art work in auto laminated glass; wouldn't take much of a leap for them to do building glass with art or polyester for that matter, but who knows these days.
