So long Neil. First man on the moon.

My hero & my lifetime inspiration.

I will think of you every night when I look up at the moonlit sky.

Blue skies & tailwinds.

I can't even imagine the HUGE set of stones that guy must have had. Boss tells you that you are going to be the first man on the moon.....and we are going to send you there in a metal thimble that we are pretty sure can get you there and...... most likely back. Hole fug. It may not sound like much today but consider that your cell phone has more technology in it than the first Apollo capsule.

The entire story of what it took to get Neil & Buzz on the moon is the most fascinating subject I have ever read about. I can't even begin to tell you of the sacrifices these men made for their country, for humanity and science.

There have been dozens of books written by people who were directly involved with the project. I have read almost all of them. Among the best ones:

  • Buzz Aldrin / Magnificent Desolation
  • Mike Collins / Carrying The Fire
  • Craig Nelson / Rocket Men
  • Gene Krantz / Failure is not an option
  • Gene Cernan / Last Man on The Moon
  • and many others........

Many people feel that this bygone era represented the pinnacle for our country. On July 20, 1969, the entire civilized world came to a halt and watched Neil descend the ladder and make his famous remark.

The plaque they left behind: "We came in peace for all mankind".

Tom is correct - you actually have more raw processing power in your digital watch then they had on board the Apollo Command Module and the Lunar Module.

The 11 Crew believed that they had a 97%+ chance of returning home safely, but only about an 80% chance of a successful moon landing. The autopilot was steering the ship toward an unsuitable landing site when Neil disengaged it and hand flew it to a safe area, with only seconds of fuel left. Buzz says that Neil was the best pilot he ever knew (imagine how many pilots a guy like Buzz knows).

It is a fascinating story to read about. I can't ever seem to get enough of it. I have the autograph of every man that walked on the moon.

Neil's passing has hit me very hard. I never met this man, but he has inspired me since the age of 9 that with hard work, dedication and persistence, a man can achieve his his most ambitious goals.

Then to find out you have only 30 seconds of fuel left to find a place to land and get safely landed....

Hey 123,

You have to read Buzz's account of it in "Magnificent Desolation". He was standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Neil in the LM with one eye on the fuel gauge and one eye on Neil, wondering when & where the Commander (Neil) would set it down or if he would run the tank dry and crash it on.

Some may also remember the famous reply from Mission Control / Houston:

"We copy you down Eagle, we got a bunch of guys about to turn blue down here."

Neil was overdue for the landing and the fuel time remaining was estimated to be just seconds.

Can you say claustrophobic?

Hi SA,

It was extremely tight in the LM.

One of the reasons why Neil was the first was that the door was on his side and the prospect of Buzz climbing over him to get out was considered too difficult/dangerous.
