Glass Break risk scenario on butt jointed panes.

Recommended Posts

Looked at a commercial Building today. Customer complains of heat coming through the upper panes that are at a 22 degree angle toward the summer sun (top of glass is tilted inward).

The upper windows are butt jointed without the apparent use of sealant inside or outside of the joints.

On the other three sides, vinyl seals are utilized.

Again, the the upper windows each join the lower windows at a 22 degree angle as an architectural flourish.

Lastly, the windows face west and have a factory reflective tint

on side 1 (exterior surface).

Additionally, the factory tinted windows have no glass bugs indicating tempered or laminated.

So what do y'all think of a Silver 20% application to side two (inside surface) as to Glass Breakage risk ?

On sloped glazing I always assume the glass is the more likely to break laminated if it doesn't actually say tempered or laminated. I have installed 20% silver on similar glass in the past without problems - it is a relatively safe film - I would not have used something more absorbing. You might want to check with the manufacturer whose film you would use to see if you would qualify for glass breakage coverage.
