Removing CDA type adhesive?

Recommended Posts

My usual process is to peel top layer, bag it and soak with soapy water/amonia for about an hour and scrape the last layer.

This didn't work yesterday with 7 y.o. SYDS 25. Oddly, only 1 out of 8 sliders went bad. Actually my first warranty with Sun Tek.

The last clear layer and adhesive won't budge. I used an entire pack of triumphs.

Any suggestions on a solvent that will melt this stuff?

Thanks in advance.

Company reps are very friendly, but have no clue (what else is new?).

Triumph blades are not designed to remove dry adhesives. You need something stronger like 4" scraper blades.

The dry adhesive was designed to last a long time. It cannot be chemically broken down like PS.

It delaminated. A long horizontal "bubble" formed across the center. On The colonial panes the film drifted about 1/8" and the layers separated.

Sounds like a laminating adhesive issue and 2 other things, was the glass Low-E ......?

Ahhh, and therin lies the issue with those that say dry adhesive films are superior to PS. The laminating adhesive is the great equalizer...

True. A molecular bond is much stronger than a physical bond and cannot be broken as easily without some really nasty chemicals.

Rob explain more why.

Dry adhesive forms a molecular bond with the glass. To my knowledge there has never been a reported case of dry adhesive failure when properly installed. Films with laminate layers use a laminate adhesive such as 'Adsol' that is similar to PS in that it is a physical bond. Of course like anything, there are differing grades of laminate adhesive and they can fail as in this case. So no matter how good your dry adhesive works, the laminating adhesive can fail.
