It is called photochromic films. NDFOS or Glory chemical makes them. About 10years ago, madico used to have this kind of technology but they didn't really launched it.

The Limitation with this technology is very slow color-change to darker shade when exposed to stronger sunlight/UV. It doesn't change as fast as spectacle transition lens but it is certainly an attractive marketing draw.

What's the realistic life expectancy, install workability?

Installs like normal window film but if organic elements are used, the VLT change might not work forever. The main problem is still the slow rate of change. For the past decade, I am always curious why madico don't launch it. However, I don't have ties with madico for some years, I don't even know that ME 5/20/35 XSR is no longer available. So much changes to keep up with these days.

Beware!!!

After a while, it stops changing...

In hot climates it will stick to the dark color, but the area covered by the window gasket stays in a lighter shade...

Also, we experinced some adhesive damage after a while of using that film...

The manufacturer couldn't tell us why that happend as well as it wasn't covered by warranty
