Worldwide PET Film Shortage

To All Industry Professionals:

Starting a few months ago, I started hearing about a severe and growing shortage of PET film all over the world. I obtained this information from several different/unrelated and unimpeachable sources both within the USA and abroad. I have now corroborated those facts with information obtained outside our industry.

The PET Film shortage is very real. You can confirm it for yourself. Google the following term: "PET Film Shortage". Be sure to read the first 10-15 results.

There are several factors involved, not the least of which was a decision taken by DuPont to close down their plant in Florence, SC.

Irrespective if which brand you use, this news is of great importance to you as PET film makes up 90%++ (by mass) of what you install every day. Longer term, more capacity will come online to ease the shortage, but in the short run this will likely impact all of us in one way or another.

That remains to be seen. From the stories I have been hearing and reading, the more critical issue is availability.

One industry veteran put it like this: "The most expensive pound of polyester is the one you can't obtain for a customer".

Eventually, more capacity will come on line to ease the shortage and prices will eventually drop, but until then we have to buckle our belts and be thankful that we can get our hands on it.

The packaging industry has also been devouring it. There is a trend away from adhesive labels and toward shrink wrapped polyester jackets. Don't forget flat panel display monitors.

Sadly that 'eventual drop' can take a long time to come around.... let's hope the silver lining is the loss of the 99 dollar tint.
