Glass Broke on Commercial Job

I tinted a new strip mall that just went up. There are 14 (30x72) windows. I've done some commercial, residential and have not had any problems but I am by no means an expert on what to install and not install on dual pane or low e. I've only tinted 6 of the 14 windows b/c the other part was not carpeted or ready yet. About a week after I did the 6 windows one Cracked from about halfway up all the way to the top. contractor calls the glass company and of course they tell him it's b/c it was tinted. The good thing is him and the glass guy didn't get along from the beginning and he's tell's the glass guy he's full of Sh*t. Then the contractor calls me and I've known him for a while and assure him it did not happen b/c of the film. to make a long story short the glass guy doesn't replace it and the contractor ends up buying a new glass from another company. I'm going this week to tint that 1 again and then finish the other 8. He just want's to make sure along with myself that no more glass is going to break. They are dual pane clear pieces and I used Solargard Silver 20. I don't know about low-e or anything like that. there is a little overhang on the building in which I didn't know that could make a difference until I was looking on here. I just want to make sure it is safe to tint the rest with the silver 20 this is the first time anything like this has ever happened in my 8 yrs. of tinting and any help would be greatly appreciated. if you have any more questions please ask. thanks.

That film is approved, as long as they aren't too big (over 100sg'ea.)and check that shading. If the glass is installed correctly, and in good shape, shouldn't be a problem. I've installed alot of that over the years, and only had a couple break. :spit Ask your rep for more info.

we had a situation like that a while back. we hired a different glass shop to replace the glass and my boss and the boss of the other glass shop that put the glass in first were there to watch. when the guys pulled the cladding off there was a screw into the side of the glass, this place was brand new. the glass installers screwed up and we got out of having to pay for it because of course the glass shop was blaming the tint for the breakage. we all found out that day otherwise, the glass installer screwed the pooch. lots of stuff can happen and the tint always gets blamed. it sucks. you can make a ton of quick money on flat glass and lose it just as fast, its risky damn business even when you do things right.

no kiddin....but yeah OT is right...you shouldn't have any problems with silver 20.

Let me ask you this. If you installed film on 12 panes of glass and one breaks. Why didn't the rest break?

That one pane broke because there was a flaw. When I am on site when my glass guy replaces a window, I find anything from screws. nails, cans, twisted frames, chipped edges, you name it.

That is the nature of our business, we are an aftermarket business. We get the blame for more than what we deserve.

I would have to agree with tintman...it has to be a flaw in the glass.
