How much film to get??

Since I am just starting out, I'm not really able to keep a large inventory of film on hand. I'm ordering as I go. The first job I did I have just enough... I pulled the last window and I was at the core. Talk about tight.

I have two more jobs coming up in the next two weeks, so I need to order film for them, but I want to make sure I get enough without getting way too much..

Is there an easy way to figure out how much film to order? If I take the total sq. footage, I know that won't work out since not everything can be cut w/o waste and such...

Figure out how many linear feet you need and what size rolls they need to come off of (so you don't waste much). Then you can just order partial rolls. You'll probably pay a fee for them to cut the roll down for you but you won't be buying much extra. Usually partial rolls can only come in 25'-50' increments though! This is what we do when we need a film we know we won't use much of!

Measure the LINEAR feet, always add at least 5 or 10 feet for any mishap. You will use the film eventually, you'll get hammered on pricing by ordering partials all the time. If you need 35', order 50' at least, then when some guy calls for a couple patio doors, you have the film and can knock it out. Or you could do it however the hell you want. :passout

This was a lot easier when I worked for a shop that just said here - take a box of film with ya. Of course, being on my own is a lot more statisfying. :passout

About 75 linear feet on a 36 inch roll, if your figures are film size needed vs. exact glass size.

Its easier then it seems man

im not sure from your list what is length width and quantity

Also just as a rule I always round up to next HIGHEST EVEN INCH (ex 30 3/4" would be 32") that allows a little room for error

SO new list with what I think you meant

8 - 30" X 36"

1 - 36" X 60"

2 - 8" X 60"

8 - 28" X 34"

16 - 20 X 34"

Your maxium width (from your measurements listed) is 36"

8 @ 30" or 240 linear inches

1 @ 60" or 60 linear inches

the next 8" piece you can get 2 out of 1 60" by 36" piece so

1 @ 60" or 60 linear inches

8 @ 28" or 224 linear inches

16 @ 20" or 320 linear inches

add em up equals 904 linear inches

divide by 12 converts that to linear feet

I get 75 1/3 linear feet

thats the exact amount out of a box you need to do the job

so I would order a 36" X 100' roll of film and you will have extra for stock

I hope my math is write did it quick

some how if im wrong someone will point it out

But it also looks like a 60" roll would work, splitting it to get the 30" and less windows, and using the full 60" for the big one. There's no getting around doing the math for flat glass to find the right size roll to order.
