Trip to Florida to see shuttle - advice??

If we have a cold winter, I'm thinking of taking a trip to FL to visit some friends... and I've always wanted to see a launch. According to NASA.ORG they have missions set for Feb 4 and March 18th. Now I know because of the launch windows liftoff times often get pushed around... If I get a cheap airfare ticket deal I'm not sure if I could move the dates around any... but I'd be at least willing to give it a shot. In general, I don't really care for Florida vacations, but I haven't seen my friends in a long time and thought it would be nice. So another trip to FL probably won't happen for some time.... As it is, I haven't been there since I got out of HS many years ago.

Anyway... the Feb date is set for 6am.... March is in the afternoon. If they were night launches I'm sure it would be visible from further away... but since they are day launches... I'd like to get close. Plus to hear and feel it would be super cool.

Does NASA have a place for people to go to view it?? Or are there good spots to check out in the area?

Also - does NASA have any kind of tour of the center??

yes NASA has a tour of center , I'm not sure if they have a place but there are all kinds of good spots to watch the launch from ... I live on the other side of state and can still see it when they launch in the day time , I've tried to go and see a night launch twice , both were scrubbed !

They have it all, a grandstand setup to watch the liftoff, and tours as well. Its pretty cool to see one go up, I live in Tampa and can see it when its a night launch. Definitely worth checking out though, its one of those things you'll never forget.

After 2010, no more shuttles until the replacement are built. :(

I gotta try and go....

I can see day or night from my house in miami. one of the coolest things I have seen in person was a launch from the bay at the cape. you could see the shock wave comming across the bay like a nuclear bomb blast, when it reached you, you could feel the sound like standing infront of the speaker tower at a black sabath concert. totally badass.

went there on a tour and the tours are great also... I remember seeing everthing that they have ever put or attemted to put in space. there is so many different things to do..the tour is nice but think I wanted to walk around and see so much more...the tour we went on took us out to the lunch pads, took us to the assembly plant (which can fit the iffel tower in in four pieces) saw the crawler and ..ok yea you see it all! the only thing that would of been better is a space walk at zero gravity. its been so long since ive been to cape canaveral and would say id go again.

the luanches are seen here from even jax...no way do you feel the shock wave, but I would of loved to be at a launch at the cape..I say a great idea!

The best views I have had of the shuttle was just taking Hwy 50 all the way to the end. It ends at a bay across from the launch pad. It is probably 8-12 miles away but you can see it plain as day. It looks like it is right across the water. You can park on a side street and walk a couple blocks to the water where there will be a lot of people. But it is free. And as the shuttle goes up you feel the shockwave and the windows on the buildings behind you shake like crazy. It is pretty amazing. also I would shoot for the 6am launch. It will still be a little dark out. Nothing compares to a night launch. It literally turns daytime. That is how bright it is. Stunning
