effective one way mirror

I need to know technically is it more effective to have spot lights shining from a ceiling pointing towards the windows or from the bottom pointing up.

AND. How far out should the spot lights be placed in order to maximize surface area.

After installing, will it provide a one way effect?

Both rooms have florescent fixtures.

Hi Jack,

This is Howard at Express. I think I can help you here. We get our share of police departments calling in here for advice on interrogation rooms.

The position and focus of the spots is not the most critical aspect. You need to consider the overall "light ratio". As a general rule, it needs to be eight times brighter on the "visible side" than it does on the "privacy side".

To achieve a one-way effect:

#1 - Increase the surface reflectivity (Silver 15% or a Dual Reflective incorporating Silver on one side.)

#2 - Alter the ambient lighting to achieve your 8:1 ratio (or better if you can).

If the lighting is equal on both sides, or close to it - you will not be able to achieve the desired effect. Installing a sample on the glass is always a smart idea.

I hope this helps,

Howard

I did one recently for a school for disabled children. It was a difficult one since both room were exterior with a lot of windows. I used Aegis Aquity Outlook 07 on it. Placed the film on the viewing side and the only thing they had to do was use room darkening shades on that side. :beer
