FG Scratches

I thought I would share this. The person we network with is a professional glass cleaner and when he signs a new client up for cleaning services, he always ensures that they sign a waiver to release him of any liabiity for scratched glass. He has informed me that razor blades don't cause scratches in glass, glass on glass causes scratches on glass. Hopefully this information is useful to you.

Group,

Looks like GANA is holding tough about the BULLetins they are distributing. They just renewed them for the next five years. I guess the IWCA's message hasn't changed their mind.

I just got back from the IWFA (International Window Film Association) and they seem interested in what's going on with GANA, their BULLetins and their position. Their members are getting hammered and they didn't know what was causing all the glass scratching. They have to scrape every inch of every piece of glass before any film can be applied.

I will be investing more of my time with this association and keep the group informed.

Good luck,

I think glass cleaners use scrapers too, his (my friend) advice isn't to avoid using scrapers but to educate the consumers about why glass scratches and have them sign a waiver to release you of liability. He explained to me that it isn't the razor blades but it's the annealing process of the glass. As the glass is being moved down the conveyor belt to go through the annealing process, it picks up small, fine debris from those rollers if they aren't maintained properly. Usually that debris is glass, so glass particles are annealed to the surfaces of the glass and when we go to scrape the glass, we strip those fine particles off with the razor blade moving it along the glass surface, and that is what causes the scratches.

I just thought it was interesting that their association is working with IWFA to help us tinters out to protect ourselves from glass liability. I have seen janitorial services get nailed for glass replacement when they go through construction sites for clean up, and all the glass in the building becomes scratched during clean up. I've always been told it's because they didn't use clean or new razor blades, but I'm getting different information from professional glass cleaners.

You can usually tell if its gonna sratch. The scraper sounds diffrent like its scraping over some kind of "grit". I'm glad I now know where that "grit" comes from. FYI if you ever hear that noise (you'll notice it it's pretty obvious) break out a srub pad, and give the glass a thurough visual inspection. It's a little time consuming, but it's a lot easier than dealing with glass you scratched.

Another indicator is the glass will sometimes already have scratches.

this post is just one correction and alot more info on the gritty glass. Gritty glass comes for a few sources they are welding slag (spattered on looks like a spash), grinding sparks (usually black or rust color), specialy coated glass (rarer but can be found in interiors glass of a high end store to reduce glare or increase luster) and of course DEFECTED manufactured glass. Defected manufactured glass is caused during the tempering process in 2 parts. The glass is cut to size then (if done right) put into a washing machine and then into a tempering oven. If the water in the glass washing machine is not regularly cleaned debris will remain (kinda like your dishwasher) and the glass debris binds back into the glass or gets stuck on the rollers. When its stuck on the the rollers it will eventualy redeposit on another peice of glass even if after the washer cleaned. Cleaning the water and the rollers from the start would solve this ploblem and then just regular maintainece of washer water is all required. One major glass manufature has done this and no longer has to worry about the issue. As for the other manufactures they all do dealing with each other so no one says anything and its easier to leave status quo alone for now. When we scrap the glass we knock off those little glass pieces and thats what actually causes the scratch (though rusty blades can do it too) more information can be found at www.stopscratchedglass.com. If you run into this I just use a rag and squegee, and let the coustomer know, people have sued the glass companies and won.

and then there's nickle/sulfide inclusions which not only can nick your blade ,then YOU (me too) are scratching the glass.

I had to remove a graphic film design from 2 s/lites in an office and replace with a new design in a different film on the office side of the lites. One s/lite was easy no scratches at all. And the other !$@@#$%@#$$#@$#@ scratches all over....... I was wondering why me then I noticed at the bottom of the lites at the silicone joint that there were 2 tempered logos on the glass. one on the 1st surface and the other on the 2nd surface.....Just for kicks I went into the corridor side wet the glass and with a new blade in the scraper the effect was the opposite... It turned out that the surface the logo was on didn't scratch a bit but the other surface did practically just by lookin at it.

SO lesson learned ......look out for that logo on tempered and in any case test scraper near the floor.... hear nasty scratchy noise park the scraper......

If you go into "I might scratch ur glass routine" the custy might get scared away from our services. Sounds like an excuse for the custy to decline our services...good info though.
