8 Mil on Tempered Glass, in a Wood Frame, without an Attachment System

Hi All,

Thank you for your help so far! I am looking to significantly slow down (not actually stop) opportunistic (not professional) intrusion attempts in my residence and I am now planning to have the recommended 8 mil Panorama SA8 film installed on all accessible windows and doors. However, I have several tempered glass windows / french doors in wood frames that will not have a wet or mechanical attachment system, meaning that the film will be a daylight-install only. I know that an attachment system is highly, highly, highly recommended, but without it would the 8 mil window film on tempered glass in wood frames offer any protection?

I'd appreciate any advice, thank you, thatotherjason

I believe in a situation like that..... the first *smack* would bust the glass from the frame.... and the second *smack* would push the glass out of the frame in a nice clean sheet..... creating a very nice entry point into the residence... I believe that's how the theory goes anyways... :rimshot

That's what I was afraid of! In theory, I could see the application of 8 mil to tempered glass in a wood frame without an attachment system actually making an intrusion safer for the intruder, faster, and more stealthy!

Thank you, thatotherjason

This has been covered before. Like TallScott and I said in a previous thread, any attachment is better than NO attachment. While it's certainly not gonna stop major damage from storms, it WILL slow down an entry attempt. Dow is not necessary, any silicone or adhesive will do to attach the film/glass to the frame. Ideally, the interior quarter round moulding can be removed, apply the adhesive to the frame and window and replace the quarter round. The weak point then becomes the wooden frame. Yes, it can be forced out, but it will slow someone down considerably. And unless the intruder is REALLY persistent, they'll move on to an easier target.

It will require some reverse engineering, and wont be cheap, but it's better than nothing and less expensive than replacing the windows. On a security scale of 1 to 10 I'd give it about a 6 or so.
