Residual income from your tinting skill

Recommended Posts

Been tinting most of my life , was wondering outside of using the phrase "just expand your business " can you think of a way of making residual income (meaning repeat $$$ sent to you without you doing the work after you've set it up) ?

Example of what I mean

:

A tinter develops a computer cut program ,trains, sells it and now they get a monthly residual income from it perhaps while still running the business he already had.

another example: franchise ,train and have a residual income coming from the shops you franchised.

Any thoughts of taking a particular part of the tinting biz and being able to profit in other ways from it :thumb

Let the discussion and ideas begin :lol6

This is more geared to the tinters that have put in their time and are doing fine financially ,are self employed (you know who you are) just knowing that they can't tint forever, but have acquired skills that are worth something long after thy are done tinting :thumb

If some like the idea of throwing some ideas around, but not in the general section it can always be moved or done through PM (I respect confidentiality ) :thumb

I think franchising would definitely work, I have people ask me if I am "a franchise" all the time. I of course, do not live in a climate where it would work in a small travel radius, but I could see it working in many more urban areas :thumb

I don't think franchising is the answer ,although something similar (my way of thinking might be limited because of where I live )

I like the idea of training in an area that isn't large enough to hold a full time tinter, but rather a add on to an existing auto business. but one they pay you to train them , how can you keep the money coming to you where you profit, yet they get value in something . Just thinking out loud to see what materializes out of the conversation :thumb

I don't see how it would be beneficial for the other party when they can receive proper training in other programs or by other means. I think Franchising would work well if you were established enough and had potential employees, or even competitors employees that would like to own their own shop someday. They could have their own shop, with your name on it, and pay you for it :thumb

The rewards would be name recognition and volume discounts on film purchases, along with many others including referral networking. :lol Not putting much thought into it but this is what comes to mind when I consider it :lol6

Most franchises started with only one or two locations :lol

The only problem I see with this is I think most tinters would rather just charge less, undercut everyone else and keep the savings instead of spending it on a franchise name . I might be wrong ..but I know that's what I would do and I know that's what has happened to many business around here.

Ziebart comes to mind , the guy that ran Ziebart was tired of paying monthly fees, he decided to offer all the same services under his own name , charged less, yet made more and had no one to answer to . Not slamming the idea , these are just the problems I see with doing it :lol2

offer to sell do it yourself tint kits to the locals if you have a program and cutter laying around. :lol2 Seems like the DIY type are gonna get film anyway so why not from the local tint shop..

At the time of sale you could offer to install the tint and if they decide to DIY,offer a small discout if they come back with a bag of ruined tint and have you do it.:lol

It may foster some good will with the custy, and if a shop charged enough for the tint kit it might be worth it.

Maybe offer that on craigslist for all the deal seekers.

just an idea :lol away

This I had thought of :thumb , I was thinking of a bigger picture though hence the wording of the thread "residual" :lol6

3 words...Klingon Window Film.

I thought Leo was going to do it. :lol

Sorry, little attempt at humor there, but seriously too bad about the whole copyright thing I'm sure there would be one by now. :lol6

Looks like Stan has his mojo working with the training vids and classes and such. But that still takes work. Zolar had some stuff going on, but I haven't heard a word about it since some of his tools got picked up, hopefully he will let us know what's going on with his tools.

You could look into McFly's visual tinter deal, I believe that is still up for sale, but I believe if it was truly profitable that it wouldn't be up for sale.

Even the pittance I make from this site takes a lot of work. I think you are going to have to go "outside the box" here Brad.

You make a very good point.... And many people would definitely do things this way. I worked as an installer and sales rep in this business for about 5 1/2 years before working for myself. One day out of the blue the owner said to me "Do you want to buy this business?" I had a decision to make, I could quit and start my own from scratch, or I could pay the :thumb load of money he was asking and buy the business name, clientel and reputation he had established for over 20 years.

I paid the :lol6 load of money and it will take me 7 years to zero it out. I will never think twice about that decision because it was the right one without a doubt. Name recognition is huge. There is no better way to get a business off the ground than to have a name people know and recognize.

Open a burger joint called Mickey Deez next to a McDonalds, sell the same exact :lol and where are people going to go?

Its all theory and would take a long, long time and effort to do something like this, but I could see it working for sure. 3M Window Film Depot has already done this to a certain extent.
