Coaches deserve special thanks for daily grind they go through

By Terrell Owens

Special to the Star-Telegram

I really want to dedicate this article to the Dallas Cowboys' coaching staff.

Coaches rarely get the attention and the publicity they deserve, especially the assistants. These guys work every day throughout the week.

On Monday, they get in early in the morning to break down Sunday's game for us to view. Then on Tuesday, when the players are off, they are working to put together the game plan for the upcoming game. Wednesday through Saturday, they are there from morning to night implementing the plays with us in practice and then staying late to view that day's practice and get ready for the next day's practice. Finally, on Sunday, we play the game and try to execute everything we learned from the coaches.

In other words, coaches do not have a day off during the season, so that's why I want to dedicate this article to them.

Our coaches have been steadfast in their approach in getting us ready as a team and making sure our cohesiveness stays intact throughout the season.

My coach in particular, coach Ray Sherman, has been a huge reason for my success. He has been there for me since Day One. He did not come into this situation with a tainted mind like some of the coaches I have had in the past. Everyone has to earn everyone's respect, and it is easier doing that when you are working with a clean slate. When that slate is tainted, it is very hard to overcome. Some put up a wall that is sometimes too hard to climb and in the end, we all fail. Coach Sherman has never had a wall up with me and he has always treated my teammates and I with nothing but respect.

Every Sunday when I play, I not only play for the fans and my teammates, but I play for Ray Sherman. He has helped me on the field tremendously and I tell him I want to reach even higher. I want to push my talent as hard as I possibly can. I work too hard in the off-season -- running and working out my body -- to not reach the levels that I know I am capable of reaching. Ray Sherman has helped me reach those levels. I have had many good coaches in my career, but Ray is one that I will probably always have a "forever" relationship with.

Thanks, Ray.

Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has also done a great job. It's his first year as an offensive coordinator, and he has blown it out of the water. He is an offensive coordinator that works his playbook around his talent, not work his talent around his playbook. He understands the talent that he has, and he knows how to implement all of us in his scheme so we can be successful.

His ability to do that will make him a head coach in the NFL sooner than later. For our sake, I hope it is later or after I retire.

On a serious note, he deserves all the good that's coming to him...but I still hope it's later.

I credit him as well with our success and the way we all are playing. Players are having their best seasons, along with myself. That can't be by accident. Coach Garrett deserves a lot of that praise along with our individual coaches.

Let's not forget about our head coach, Wade Philips. His philosophy is evident in our record and the way he handles his coaching staff. Everyone around Valley Ranch is happy, and winning does that for any team or corporation. Owner Jerry Jones brought him in here so I will give him the most credit.

Thanks, Jerry.

A small note about last week's game because it deserves to be mentioned, after all it was against the great Brett Favre. I was actually looking forward to watching Brett a little because you never know when he will call it quits. Unfortunately for the Packers, Brett was injured early and did not have a chance to do one of his miracle comebacks.

The better team won that night, and that team was the Cowboys.

I know Deion likes to hear me say, " I love me some me," and I do. But I also "love me some Cowboys."

On a more serious note, on Monday I will celebrate my birthday by giving back to 81 needy families in the Dallas community with proceeds raised by the Terrell Owens Catch A Dream Foundation's first annual "December to Remember" Holiday Fundraiser. For more information, go to www.terrellowens.com.

I think the guy has matured a helluva lot this year.
I'd like to think that too, but let's see him not get the catches and lose a couple first. Same with Randy Moss. :please

Nope, a worthless thug is somebody that acts like pacman jones or chris henry from cincy... If T.O. helps 81 families in the DFW area, that's 81 families that would not have been helped otherwise....

I say good for T.O. ... it seems he is maturing and there are 81 families to prove it !! :please:lock
