Hello tint world!!!!! I've been pondering this for a few weeks and am wondering what you guys and gals think. Most of you have been in the game way longer than I, and may have been in similar situations...

First things first:

-I dont tint full time. I have a well paying day job where I put in 47-50hrs a week

-I run my own tint shop on nights and weekends.

Heres the deal.... Im buying my first house. I will be OK finacially, but I will be on a tough budget. My tint shop has achieved the main goal I had for it, but hasnt surpassed it. The goal was to build clientel, get my feet wet in the business world, hone my tinting skills, hone my sales skills, and finacially 'break even' or close to it. Any profit was a bonus... not expected.

Now Im in the midwest.... it gets very cold in the winters and tinting does slow down substantially. Money WILL come out of MY pocket to keep the shop up and running. This on top of the house may just be too much for me and my pocket book.

Here's what Im thinking of doing.....

Loose the shop and all of the overhead. Of course Ill keep all my tools, inventory etc.

There are 2 auto accesory stores in my area that currently offer tinting. However I'ts sub-contracted and both places only do it one day a week. Tues or Thursday or something like that.

Well I was thinking of offering them saturdays. I would have all my tools, supply the film, back the warranties, supply the sample boards and even deal with customers.

What do you guys think about this??? The way I see it is overall I will be always making money..... never the chance of 'loosing' it.

My only concerns are approaching them with a price per car for me to tint. I know we cant discuss prices on here but if anyone would be willing to PM me, I will give my current prices...these shops prices, and what I want them to pay me per car. Im unsure as if Im asking way to much, or maybe even going to low!!!!! :thumb

Bottom line is, I love tinting and am not stopping. Now its just a matter of which road I travel down.

All advice will be GREATLY appreciated, and Im hoping some of you PM me on the matter. :evileye:lol2

Put off buying a house until you have enough income to have everything you want or need. Patience is a virtue. To give up your shop to cut overhead isn't a good idea unless you know these other shops are going to keep you in work, if you subcontract you will depend on them for work, not a good idea :evileye Have you thought about actually tinting full time? Maybe that's why you haven't surpassed your goals but then again it seems like your not in it to get ahead, no offense but you do say you just wanted to break even and profit was a bonus. With winter and school around the corner now isn't a good time to jump into buying a house if your not sure about your tinting and other job providing enough money. Could you do just fine with what your doing now :thumb

No, cant put off this house. Its my grandparents old house. Im getting a GREAT deal. Plus I need a place to live!! :lol2 This is one of those deals you just dont let pass....

Sub contracting would be 100% play money for me... Im only looking for 2 cars a week if I go that route! Honestly I would love to tint full time but right now Im making over 50K a year and Ill be at 60k in a year or so and still room to grow. The ONLY way I could see pulling that money tinting full time would be running my own shop full time with a good STEADY volume of work.

And to Willie's reply, your right on that one!! This house has a detatched 1 car. Its small, BUT could easily be remodeled to a bigger garage with A/C. :lol2

Ahhh jump on the grandparent house. I thought you wanted to get a house slightly over your budget. If subcontracting is play money what are you waiting for? Get rid of the shop, tint from your garage and subcontract as long as you can swing it.

Why bother with full time if you can do what you like as a hobby and always have steady income :evileye

I'm nobody... but I agree with Marco. I think that has been *my* biggest problem... I have a night job which pays my bills... and then during the day I tint. But, if I don't tint enough, I'm fine. THAT, I think holds me back from making my business huge. Fact of the matter, since I don't rely on tinting to eat, I think the importance of doing well tinting isn't where it should be. This summer I have been trying very hard to change that, short of quiting my nite job. Which I think about every nite. If I did that, then I would have no other option but to blow the amount of tinting I do out of the water.

Just my :evileye

I agree with Roach..he's a nobody :lol2 Seriously though do you really want the added stress of "having to tint" to live? You already know the answer to that. You are not in the position it sounds to take on all that added stress. Buying property is a no lose situation, it always increases in value....unless willie moves in next door. :gasp
