Hey guys great forum you got here. Well I own a Glass shop in Montana and mostly do autoglass, I'd say 85% autoglass and the rest is residential. Anyways alot of my customers ask if I do tinting which I don't so they drive 100 miles to Great Falls or Billings to get it done. Well I want to add tinting to my business but I dont have the time to go to a school to learn. I saw these videos on this site http://www.autowindowtinting.com/ anyone have any idea if they are any good. I don't plan on tinting any customers vehicle until I am confident that I have the skills to do a quality job. I plan on doing my own vehicle and some friends and family first. I was going to hire someone local to do the tinting, but no one here does it. So I figured this would be an excellent addition to my business.

Thanks for any help or ideas.

Any video has it's limitations..and advantages..sounds like you have a good situation to get into the biz and your approach about not getting into it customer wise until you have a few jobs under your belt is certainly correct.

Ideally, get a video of your choice, and practice, however I would also recommend a training course for the weekend as offered by many manufactures..hands on education is invaluable, not to mention the use of this site as a resource :eyebrows

Good luck in your venture :eyebrows

and as far as stans vid's on autowindowtinting.com...they seem a heck of alot better than many ive seen. I've only seen a few "teasers" from them but he seems to describe things quite well....alot better than I would if I were putting it into words.

But as TW said....hands on is by far the best way to learn. Ask as many questions as you can and get as much hands on with an experienced installer so that he can pick apart your mistakes. be ready to get pizzed once in a while cuz starting out it can be very frustrating. practice, practice, practice. Good luck. :eyebrows

Thanks for the quick response. Glad to hear that the video seems good, I think I'll order them today. There are 16 vids so I think he covers quite a bit, but like you guys said having an experienced installer on hand would be the best way to learn. Unfortunatly I don't have that option. I'll look into the weekend training course you suggested Tint Wizard maybe they have one in MT but I doubt it.

What is the most popular tint you use, and what do you suggest I start with? Also what are the tools that I need to order to get started.

as far as most popular tint goes...thats a loaded question around here :eyebrows everybody has their favorites. take a look at the window film/inventory section. you can get a feel for what different professionals here think of the different films. :shock

as far as tools go, check out this thread. It has some pretty good advice

tint tools

oh...and when ordering the videos...mention tintdude.com! I think I remember stan saying he gives a discount to members. :eyebrows

This is not in any way meant to be a dig against your abilities, but I personally learned the hard way myself...

I "watched" a guy for about a week and then set out to tint cars by myself with no one telling me what to do, or, more importantly, what I was doing wrong. It was such a difficult and painful process (6-8 hours each for my few cars,) that I'm surprised I stuck with it. I did, and now have the reputation of being second to none in my area.

Anyway, if you don't have time to stop and get hands on training, then maybe you shouldn't bother with window tinting (unless you think it's more profitable than autoglass) because your profits are gonna be next to nothing at first. Further, the learning process is gonna take you away from the work you already know.

I get autoglass magazine sometimes, and I've gotten the impression that there's a huge difference between a skilled autoglass repair man and an inexperienced one.

I think the difference in window tinting is even more dramatic.

If you're commited, you may find that taking a week and getting some training will save you months worth of lost income in the long run. :eyebrows

D.) All the above is good advice

You might check the classifieds here and see if you can hire a experienced tinter thats looking to relocate. If your glass business is strong enough you can offset the costs of start up and the learning curve.

Good luck :eyebrows
