Cutting back glass when using dark films

When using darker % films where you find it difficult to identify where to cut - even with a very bright light do you have any tricks you can pass on?

I did an x type Jaguar today and the rear deck was touching the matrix and it made it almost impossible to see. I ended up cutting the film by guesswork - it was Ok but there must be better methods.??

I'm suprised somebody has not made a tool for this - something that holds a china marker whilst you follow the contours of the glass - if you know what I mean?

I actually use white poster paper cut in strips and wedge it in the areas that my light doest cover like I think it should. Takes a few extra minutes, but works great for me....
