Tint - the main focus but...

After nearly 14 years in the same location, I'm moving. My current location has nearly no walk in traffic. It is all referral and repeats. My sales are consistant , but within the past year 2 other tinters in better locations have made things harder. So I've opted to give the high overhead HEAVY TRAFFIC route a try. My new building is huge, I can probably fit 10 cars in it. Not ideally designed though so realistically I'll have 4 to 5 comfortably. Also a super big show room and it is the best road for traffic in my city. I'm adding auto glass replacement and also considering vinyl as I have a new Graftec plotter that is not being used. What soft ware is best for a novice entering this field. How is glass replacement profit wise in comparison with tinting. My balls are on the line, but I'm excited, optimistic and you only live once so what the hell! :lol

probably enough profit to say screw the tinting, we only do glass.

Location is one of the key factors but you really need to target your market. If you want dealership work, then obviously you do not need a high traffic location. Usually high traffic locations have a higher premium in rent. When you are in your slower months, you will feel the stress of the added overhead. There is alot to think about when you decide to move. If you have been at your previous location for that many years, I would just stay. Now you will have to compete against the other established shops on the same or near by high traffic location.

I would suggest carrying a specialty film that neither of the other tint shops in your area have or go after a different target market. Just my 2 cents. Good Luck.

Not that you will want an answer from me anyway, but here it is. A good software program for a plotter is Flexi 7 from scanvec amiable. Very integrated, you can pull stuff straight from corel into it and cut. Tried out cheaper programs, and they were not worth it. Have been very satisfied with this program here. Will cost you about $1800 for the basic version and $2400 for the expert, you probably don't need the expert unless you plan on doing alot of detailed design. Good luck in your new digs, hope your successful!

Wow Skeet... will have to get out more often and come see the place... maybe hang a while... maybe hone my skills on the new paint protection one Saturday... maybe just see how things are going with you.

Good luck... :rollin

Thanks TintBoy - you've been doing it so your positive experience with that package is worth checking out. sl*t - I hope you're right. I told a couple of glass guys who I don't wan't to burn bridges with and they said I should rethink that part. Lite - I own my original spot so I'll keep it for a while without renting in case I come crying back home. Dealership work is something I'll never focus on. Every week there is a new dealer needing his car done (for nothing) and gonna send all this work. Never happens. Metint - you're gonna freak. Come on by anytime after Oct 1. BTW my wife thinks I'm nuts. :booga But I prove her wrong all the time! :lol6

Glad to hear you own the original shop. Wish I had a place of my own. Paint protection might actually be bigger than we expect. I tried it twice and the second time seems alot easier. Might get into it as a side business to kill some free time, hopefully I will never have free time but just in case. The Llumar rep told me that they are coming out with something that will be easier to install than any other clear bra kits out there. Also comes with a protective layer over the surface which you remove after the installtion is complete. Can't wait to see it at SEMA. Good luck.
