hi, im not sure if this is the right forum, but I didnt know where else to post.

anyway, I decided to gewt my car tinted and started my research. I have a question or 2.

1. do all installers have a warranty on their work? if not, should it be?

2. whats the pecking order from light to dark? (smoke, dark smoke, limo, etc). or is it by percentages?

3.should I ask them to go up all the way to the edge or leave a little room? (I was told that if it goes to the edge, it might peel more easily)

4. for thos in NY, is the tint law strictly enforced?

thanks for the help

Any reputable shop should stand behind thier work with a warranty

2. whats the pecking order from light to dark? (smoke, dark smoke, limo, etc). or is it by percentages?

5% - the darkest (limo), 15% - dark, 35% - darker than clear glass :bat

We use charcoal :mad

3.should I ask them to go up all the way to the edge or leave a little room? (I was told that if it goes to the edge, it might peel more easily)

Let the tinter tint :bat

4. for thos in NY, is the tint law strictly enforced?

Go legal, and be done with it

thanks for the help

If you are lucky enough to find a shop with a lifetime warranty, it is offered by the film supplier, and should cover Film and labor.

You will void most all companies warranty - if the film is not legal in your state

Get it in writing

save your reciept

and know your tint laws

when you speak of a gap at the top it should be so close to the top, you can't tell its a gap,

but not over the radiused top edge, or it could peel.

A lot of tint pros would be offended if you tell them how to tint.

Ask to see the shop's work, the different film shades, and discuss the warranty and tint laws.

You should be better equipped to make a decision.

Hang around, this site has tons of info for your reasaerch

There are several different ways of dealing with edge gaps. Some tinters file the tops, leaving no visible edge between the top of the window and the tint. Other tinters shave it just a little lower than the top of the window and others leave small 1/8"- gaps at the top. There is no "right" way to do it, we each do what we do because that is how we either know how to do it, or choose to do it. What ever choice a tinter makes, if he is good at what he does, it should NOT peel back, either filed or shaved or gapped, if done properly it shouldn't be an issue. That is why it is important to look at a tinter's work before you have him do the job, if you like what he does (OR SHE!) and you think you will be happy with the quality of the work, if you get a good warranty for a quality product you should be happy.

Important things to consider before having one's car tinted:

1. Contact several shops in the area, and see who you think by your gut feeling, knows what they are doing and that you will be comfortable working with them.

2. Check the quality of their work.

3. Check the quality of the product being installed - ie longevity, performance and warranty.

4. Stay legal.

5. Don't make your decision based on price, let that be the last criteria to determine where you go.

6. Understand that tinting is an art, find the best "artist" you can, and let him do his thing.

Good Luck!
