got a call from a small check cashing place wanting me to bid on their store front. the first thing I ask is how many bids they have to have, and who else is bidding on it.

she said they had to turn in 3 bids to corporate, and she actually told me who my competition was. :phone

I told her I wasn't even going to bother coming and measuring the glass, it was a waste of time. she asked why, and I told her--because we don't sell the same films and we don't install the same way. I said I can't compete with people when I use a far superior product.

this just blew her mind that I didn't want the job. I told her I wanted the job, but if someone 1500 miles away will be making the decision based on price alone, then it's a waste of time to even come up there.

she still was speechless. I finally said "here, I'll give you a quote over the phone, $5000"

she said nothing for like 15 seconds. I said, just want to make sure I don't end up getting the job.

I know I could have handled it better, but I'm not wasting my time giving an estimate on a job I KNOW I won't get. this kind of shiat is why I hate flat work. another reason why it doesn't mention anywhere in my ads or on my cards that I do flatty. I'm so glad we don't have to go through this bullshiat with auto. if we did, I would just stop tinting all together.

you guys who do flat get one of these from me :phone , there's no way in hell I could/would do flat work by itself.

There's always the option to bid iit and then sub it out. Sub it back to the competition.

I had my first call like that a little while ago. It was for a car dealership, that wasn't anyplace near me. I didn't ask the right questions or else I never would have gone to give the est. The place was over two hours away, already had tint that needed to be removed, and they were getting bids from 3 companies. After driving forever, I get there, see what needs to be done, and priced it very high. (I really, really, REALLY hate r/r jobs)

Needless to say they never called back. I had another guy call from another company - not too far away, but he was just getting bids to give to the higher ups.. so I just faxed him a quote. I don't mind giving a price if that's all they need - but I'll do it over the phone or via fax.

TTS,

Yes I'm one of those poor bastards who have to deal with sh!t like that everyday.

The only difference is that they (the customers) want you to go and hold their pastey little hand which takes you to god knows where all around town for sweet f a.

At least auto they just shop you over the phone and you might not have to get up out of your desk to lose the job. :dunno:bingo

This is why I knock on doors. Bidding against cutthroats is a joke. I look at the house before I even knock on the door. When I do my presentation I am bidding against nobody at all. I build rapport, develop a little trust and close the sale. I'm not even sure that I am going to run an ad in the phonebook because if they are in the phonebook, they're prolly getting more bids right?

I rarely bid commercial because of the "unreachable commitee decision. " I do residential, no cars, rarely comm. Here's my thinking, waterfront homeowners have $$, they have a view, and they have lots of sun. What the hell else could you ask for? Direct selling is the only way for me, after your name gets referred around, your busy as hell and only do warm market bids, plus they expect to pay about what their friend paid so you dont get ground down.

SELLING SKILLS!!!
