How to remove metal rub spots (the easy way)

I posted a question a few days ago asking how to remove metal rub spots. The best reply was to use toothpaste applied with a pencil eraser and a lot of elbow grease. I started with the suggested method and decided after about five minutes that the pencil eraser would require too much manual labor on my part so I went looking for an easier way. What I came up with was the toothpaste (Ultra brite Advanced Whitening Clean Mint - paste not gel) and a plastic brush rotary tool tip which came in a 150 piece set from Checker Auto (~ $20).

I squirted enough toothpaste on the tip to cover it and set the speed to low. Moving in a circular motion I attacked each spot and could see the progress right away as the spots got smaller and smaller. The trick here is to keep applying toothpaste as it thins. As you cover more and more area the window fills up with toothpaste so clean it off completely every few minutes to guage your progress.

Tips:

- mark or circle the spots you want to remove with a grease pencil (outside the window) so you don't miss them as they get smaller

- keep your rotary tool speed relatively low or you'll throw little white spots of toothpaste everywhere

- wash the tip out about every ten minutes

Before I stared I was convinced that this window was permanently scratched and the best I could do was remove the shiny metal deposits before I applied the film. To my surprise, the toothpaste completely removed everything, the tip did not leave a single scratch and the window looked brand new when I was finished. The total time to remove the damage pictured below was about 30 minutes using a rotary tool. You now have a service you can offer to the customer which won't eat half your day and your profits...
