level recommendation?

We got a new car seat for our son and it doesn't have a canopy.. so we need something to keep the sun out of his eyes. So we figure tinting our car windows will help. They will, right?

We've tried the $2 removable film you can get in the children's section of stores like Target for the side rear windows. And a suction cupped shade thing for the rear window. But since neither one of those things covers the entire window they don't always help.

So we plan to get the windows tinted. I've driven a car that had windows tinted so much that I couldn't really see out the back windows. I like being able to see out the back windows so I want to avoid something that dark. We're in California, what level of tinting would you recommend? We definitely need the rear and side rears done. Since we're doing it we're also thinking about getting the front sides done. But I read that in California the most you can do is a 70% tint for the front, so is it even worth it to do this? I don't want to go darker and even take the chance of getting pulled over.

20% on the side windows behind the front driver/passenger doors and 30 or 35% on the rear glass only.

Fronts can be done with a clear film, UVshield, or Vkool's 70% (this one cuts the heat)... may not be totally letter legal, but it is light enough to go unnoticed.

2 cents

being in callifornia myself, I deal with this matter alot,

you can do as dark as you like, but to keep it on the safe side I would go with 20%, most the new SUV's, family Vans come factory tinted with 15-20%.

the fronts yes they do state 70%, its almost a clear film, I always think that regular glass comes in 70%, I seen some windows on cars, if you read the label on the corner it sometimes says "tinted 70%"

I dont ever tint with 70% window film, it would help get the UV rays out, but not much heat reduction, most of my customers put on 50% but that's already illegal in california. does not mean you'l get pulled over for a fix-a-ticket but you have to know it is illegal.

70% is illegal as well, anything you put on really. you go on and read its legal in california but that's back when "98-99 if im not mistaken. I've checked with mylocal dmv and they have on file that nothing at all is allowed.

hope I was clear. :thumb

Cali law was changed in the late 90's to allow for UV protection clear films to be used on front driver/passenger windows. In fact, they were so adamant that CPF's LLumar UVshield (78% VLT) as it is made was too dark for their liking and would not meet the strict 'clear' standards for that State... so CPF makes an 84% version of its infamous UVshield just for that State. How do I not this? CPF was instrumental in assisting Cali rewrite the law to include UV protection film on front doors. :thumb

15 OR 20 ON THE BACK

45 OR 50 ON THE FRONT

being a cali resident as well, ive found that as long as you arent blatent about it you wont get pulled over for just tint. as long as you have a fair amount of contrast between the front and the back it wont look quite as tinted.

more times than not the ones who get the tickets for tint are getting pulled over for other offenses, when the cop gets up to the window and cant make out more than a silohette inside, he gets nervous then irritated then adds it to the ticket. cant blame em though. you try having a job where you could get lit up everyday. dark azz fronts are just an ambush to them.

on the work truck I run 5 over factory tint in the back (nope I cant see out of it) and a 50 thats supposed to look like mercedes blue on the sides and windshield (BIG NO NO I KNOW BUT IT LOOKS GOOD).

never had a tint ticket. not even as an add on to driving like an azz, which I do plenty of.

one last thing, im assuming its a family style car, profiling is wrong, but it works in your favor on this one :lol6

stopping someone for tint only, if there's a law pertaining to it, and it's visibly being broken is not profiling... keep it legal, go with the CP 84% uv SHIELD on the fronts and 20 on back sides, 30 - 35% on rears.. as metint said.. you'll be pleasantly pleased :lol6

let me clarify. a camry with nothing but tint on it (except a baby on board sticker) compared to one dumped on 18's, big ol wing, coffee can exhaust, 5 all the way around.....no wait exact same tint say 20 on the back and 50 on the fronts of both of em. which one is gonna get pulled over first to get the tint ticket?

granted the fast and the furious version is gonna get pulled over for just having a stupid looking car and the tint will be added to other offensies im sure the cop will find....wait there I go profiling myself...

as dumb as cops are when it comes to keeping up on their laws here in cali, if they think they are right they will write you up for it. ANYTHING on the fronts can get you written up. and being most factory glass is about a 70% stock (the legal limit in cali) you put anything on it you're gonna be over the limit and not gonna be able to fight the ticket, regardless what your reciept says.

from the cops ive talked to, im sure they differ form area to area, they agree with me. its not worth it to pull someone over for mild tint in the front and thats it, to give em a 15 dollar fix it ticket. just to do the paper work to process the ticket the state, county, whatever your juristiction ends up in the red.

im not trying to say its right or wrong to tint the fronts. theres reasons for and against. im just saying if youre gonna tint the fronts even with a "legal" tint, you still run the risk, may as well get a lil more heat reduction at the same time. it looks better. and a long as you arent looking anymore suspicious than ma or pa running the daily errands you arent gonna be hassled with. its a fix it, no point, infraction.

im predcicting a trainwreck, call me a hack, I just cant justify paying the $ for clear film. plus parents deserve a lil shade too. definitely do your back set though, your kid will thank ya for it (when he can talk anyway). :lol6

:lol6 Most auto glass IS NOT 70%... there are but a few that go that low.

Most auto glass ranges between 74% and 88% STOCK! :beer:lol

right about 84% but most people dont want to apply it, I've only done one 84% and that was 3 years ago. but yea it is infamous

At least it's a foot in the door... :lol6
